Hello loyal readers! You’re probably wondering where I’ve been the past few days. Thank you for your concern, but no need to worry. Truth is, I’m on a Caribbean cruise and have been without phone and internet service until today.
At around 3:15 AM PST this morning (6:15 AM ship time, 7:15 AM local time), our cruise ship entered U.S. waters for the first time and T-Mobile came back to life on my phone. I was inundated with five days worth of texts and finally found out about Cliff Lee and Jake Locker and all the other stuff that’s been going on in the real world.
But before I touch on that, let me commend the United States of America for taking control of the isle of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Were it not for St. Thomas, where we’re docked today, I would not be in touch with you now. So way to go, U.S.A. Good work, there.
And by the way, it’s 85 and sunny here, which is much nicer than 35 or 40 and rainy. They also have Wendy’s on this island, so it’s all good.
Getting back on topic, however, wow. Just wow. Imagine getting a really great gift (this vacation I’m on, for example), followed by a second great gift (Jake Locker sticking around), and then a third great gift (Cliff Lee) all at the same time. That’s how I felt early this morning when I read all my texts. To be honest, the Locker thing wasn’t all that surprising. I had a feeling he’d last one more year, so it’s not a huge shock.
Cliff Lee, though, that’s another story. Never saw this coming. No one did. This is as far out of left field as the M’s have ever gone. And it’s absolutely fantastic. Lee is no Erik Bedard, thank God, so projecting him to aid Felix in the team’s quest for a division title is perfectly reasonable. Lee is healthy, relatively consistent, and spent the past two seasons looking like an ace. He should thrive in Safeco Field.
Then you have to consider what the Mariners are giving up in exchange for Lee. Three prospects, headlined by Phillippe Aumont who, let’s face it, is basically poison to M’s fans already (Bill Bavasi’s final first-round draft pick, one of roughly 50 closers-to-be in the organization, French Canadian, all bad news). Seeing Aumont depart for Philly won’t be too painful. I’m sure there are many fans out there who’d be willing to drive the guy to Sea-Tac.
Then you’ve got Tyson Gillies (a guy we’ve all heard of, but not really) and some dude who isn’t even worth mentioning, all of which makes this a fantastic deal for the team. I’ve already been to a nude beach this week (as a spectator), and yet this news makes me happier.
Anyways, that’s all for now. Off to the pool for the afternoon. Hope you’re all doing well and I’ll get in touch with you guys again soon!
