Question: Why Is Miguel Batista Still Here?

miguelbatista2Over the past few months, we’ve taken our shots at Miguel Batista.

First, we chastised Miggy’s awkwardly out-of-place facial hair.

Then, a couple weeks ago, we simply let the guy have it based on his continuing bout with ineffectiveness.

Now it’s gotten to the point where we need to start questioning management as to why Batista is still on the roster. Because let’s face it, there’s no good reason for the guy to still be in a Mariners uniform.

There are, however, a number of reasons why Miguel should have already seen his way out of town.

One, you have the fact that he sucks.

I mean he just does. I could give you the numbers but it really doesn’t matter anymore. The numbers are bad, the performance is bad, and you, as a fan, get the jitters every time you see the dude warming up. That’s how bad this situation has become. So bad that it now inspires a Pavlovian reaction of the entire Mariners fan base.

Two, you have the fact that his contract is up after this season.

What that means is there is very little harm in releasing the guy. You cut him now, he costs you a mere pittance. You simply pick up the remaining amount of money on his contract and eat the salary. No big deal, you’re not getting any value out of him as it is.

Third, you have the replacement factor.

You get rid of Batista, you open up a roster spot for a young guy who could play a role for this team both now and in the future. It’s clear that Batista has no role on this club beyond October. So essentially, he’s just preventing a younger player — be it another relief pitcher, or even a position player — from being on the big league roster.

Maybe I’m way off base on this. It’s quite possible that Batista plays an integral role in the clubhouse, what with his novels and saxophone playing and all.

Perhaps the team is getting use out of Miggy as a source of pregame entertainment. On weekdays you have Miguel Batista story hour. On weekends, a musical concerto. Either way, it’s value, I suppose.

  1. If Kenny G. had appeal, I suppose Miguel could too. I should have mentioned that in better detail in the article.

Sometimes I leave things out of the actual article, then am forced to comment on my own post. I don’t really like doing that.
