It feels nice. We’re Pac-10 champions. At the very least, we’ll be sharing that honor with another team. But as long as we win next Saturday, it doesn’t matter. We control our own destiny when it comes the conference title, and with any luck, next week at this time, we’ll be outright Pac-10 champions for the first time since 1953. That’s Washington basketball, home of the victors.
We’ve been pimping this team all year long. It feels good to have our boasting validated. All season long we’ve been telling you and anyone else who will listen about how great this team is. Last week, we joined together with you, the fans, to influence Yahoo’s national college basketball rankings. We helped move our Dawgs up four slots in that poll. We did that! This is our team, our time, and our championship.
And we’re not done yet. We still have a week left in our regular season before we head to L.A. to compete in the Pac-1o Tournament. From there, we’re off to NCAA Tournament, and likely a high enough seed that our first round matchup will be somewhere in the Pacific Northwest (Boise, Spokane, or Portland). This is 2009. It’s a new year, and from the very first week of this new year, we told you 2009 would be different.
Enjoy it, Seattle. We’re coming off the worst sports year in our city’s history. This is the rebound. This is the comeback. One championship already in 2009. Who thought we’d be celebrating that a year ago? Go Dawgs!
