The 2010-2011 season officially starts Saturday for the Dawgs.

The Dawg Pack has been known for years as one of the premier student sections in college basketball.  We have been recognized by the likes of ESPN and other media outlets. And being a member of the Dawg Pack comes with responsibilities; here are some of the ground rules…

*Editor’s note: This is the first issue of the 2010-2011 Dawg Pack Dirt. The Dirt is now in its seventh season of production and is being put together by a brand new group of Dawg Pack members this year. This is the third generation of Dirt Diggers since the pre-game publication was created by yours truly in 2004.

In years’ past, the Dirt has been recognized by the likes of ESPN The Magazine as one of the premier student-run info sheets in the entire nation. Special thanks to our contributors for making (and keeping) this thing fantastic. Go Dawgs!

Adios, Ernesto

Dear Ernesto,

Today is a sad day. It marks the end of a beautiful relationship that we shared together. The University of Washington students and you, Ernie Kent, head coach of the Oregon Ducks and our greatest adversary.

A foe unlike any other, you proved yourself worthy of our animosity, our scorn, our jokes, and our begrudging respect all at the same time.

You were a stubborn man, but not without conviction. Our tumultuous working relationship, in fact, began as a result of your headstrong attitude.

Back in 2005,  you decided you wanted our student section relocated to your personal liking. The Dawg Pack, you argued, should not breathe down the necks of opposing ballclubs. The Dawg Pack, you reasoned, would be better situated across the court, or at least along the baselines.

You even went so far as to petition the Pac-10 with your proposal. Unfortunately for you (and fortunately for us), they shot you down. Legend has it that then-Arizona head coach Lute Olson stood up on our behalf, praising the Washington student section and insisting that we not be moved.

The Impact of Dawg Pack Dirt

February 22, 2010 13 comments

With the Husky men’s basketball team’s final regular season home game now behind us, it’s time to discuss a year of controversy surrounding Dawg Pack Dirt.

The gameday info sheet written by students, for Husky fans, and produced on these pages has created an absolute sh*tstorm over the past four months.

We’ve received compliments, complaints, national recognition, threats of physical violence, threats of legal action, and even threats on our lives in response to the work we’ve done to give Washington one of the best home court advantages in the nation. With a 17-2 home record and facing the prospect of our own mortality at the hands of internet tough guys, we must be doing something right, right?

*Editor’s note: Join us on 950 KJR AM Seattle Friday night at 7:20 p.m., and again at 8:20 p.m. as we discuss the Washington-UCLA game, with a focus on the Dawg Pack!

Also, if you’re interested in contributing to next year’s Dawg Pack Dirt, we could use a few underclassmen to carry on the tradition as our current Dawg Pack correspondents will be graduating this spring. Please send us an email if you’re interested. Thanks!

The long wait is over and it’s finally here. ESPN’s College Gameday will be doing their infamous show from Hec Ed. That means that all of ESPN’s famous basketball media personalities will be present and we need to be absolutely crazy. This game really doesn’t deserve any hype, but this is our chance to show on a world stage just how insane the Dawg Pack is.

Two more home games and if the Dawgs want to do anything in the NCAA Tournament, they pretty much can’t lose anymore. I’ll just say it. The Dawg Pack absolutely needs to bring it this week. We finally got that much elusive road win so now that the monkey is off our back. Let’s finish our last games at home like we have all season. On to the dirt…

The Game:

-USC Trojans at Washington Huskies

-Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. PST

The Team:

-U$C is currently suspending itself from any postseason play due to iffy recruiting practices that occurred in past years. Make sure to ask the Trojan players how much they’re paid.

The Dawgs are back in the hunt for the Pac-10 title with that big win on Thursday. A win this Saturday over the Sun Devils would be absolutely huge.

ASU has become somewhat of a rival after last year, and they think UW is a school of thugs so feel free to play on that. Come looking like the biggest thug you can because we all know that’s what Derek Glasser likes.

When UW played in Tempe earlier in the season, the FSN commentators called us out saying the UW students better bring it when ASU goes to Seattle so do your thing Dawg Pack! Let’s make Hec Ed crazy this Saturday!

The blackout was awesome and it was a huge win for the Dawgs on Saturday! Good job to the Dawg Pack for bringing it!

The Dawg Pack also managed to draw the ire of a few classless Cougar fans that learned a costly lesson: if you mess with a Dawg, you’re going to have to deal with all the others that will back us up.

This game is definitely a huge one if we want to hold onto any sort of NCAA Tournament hopes, so make sure to bring it again on Thursday.

*Editor’s note: Attention morally righteous Cougar fans. Please stop reading right now, as there are phone numbers of Arizona players posted below. We wouldn’t want you to see those and be tempted to use them to your advantage when the Wildcats come to play at the Beasley Performing Arts Center and Ballet Recital House on Saturday. Thanks for your understanding.

Dawg Pack Dirt: Washington State

After witnessing the strangest game of basketball you’ll ever see on Tuesday, it’s time to get back to Pac-10 play against our fellow state university with the little man complex.

If we want any shot at the NCAA Tournament, we have to keep winning at home and pick up a few on the road in this last month, so bring that intensity we brought a little over a year ago when we beat WSU to become the Pac-10 Champions.

This edition of the Dawg Pack Dirt features several names of players’ girlfriends. This serves as a friendly reminder that yelling something along the lines of: “Hey (player), I saw your (girlfriend’s name) last night!” really never gets old. It’s just a funny and creepy way to get into a player’s head like nothing else can.

We’ve also got phone numbers for four players, including standouts Reggie Moore and DeAngelo Casto, so waste no time in blowing up their phones. Be sure to keep your comments classy and represent the Dawg Pack well, as always.

Dawg Pack Dirt: Seattle

Well, I don’t really have anything to say after a completely uninspired and depressing weekend of basketball. The Dawgs play their cross-city rivals Tuesday, so  you know they’re going to be bringing a large quantity of obnoxious students. We should probably be on our game.

Seattle U is going to be insanely jacked up for this game so let’s help take them out of it early.

If this dirt seems a little lackluster and short, it’s probably because it is. Our inspiration to write this issue of the DPD could be considered equivalent to the inspiration shown by some down at USC on Saturday. That combined with the fact that I might be working on the worst internet connection ever at the moment leads to less dirt than normal. So here it is…

*Editor’s note: That was hella depressing.

*Editor’s note: UW football recruit Nick Montana, along with his dad Joe, will be in attendance for this game. Skyline HS wide receiver Kasen Williams, along with his dad, will be joining the Montanas.

Well I guarantee you nobody expected that kind of win against Stanford, but nobody is complaining. It was good to see a very full Dawg Pack now that school is back in session, but we still need everyone to bring it every night. We got called out by Bob Condotta for being pretty quiet so let’s step it up Saturday afternoon. Make signs, be crazy, and be loud. Last year’s Cal game was the triple-overtime heartbreaking loss so we have to avenge that and show that we’re still the best team in the Pac-10.

On to the Dirt…

I’m not going to lie. I had to talk myself off of the bridge, too, after the last two weeks. But I was able to convince myself that it’s still early and we still have plenty of home games left to make an impact.

When we’re struggling like this is when we need to impact the game more than ever and create that Hec Ed advantage that has led the Dawgs to wins so many times before. With that being said, onto the Dirt…

Great job starting off Pac-10 play right Dawg Pack! We hope you all had a great night celebrating the win and bringing in the New Year.

This next game is huge because ESPN The Magazine will be present to do a story on the Dawg Pack, and it is our annual — and perhaps last — Mexican Heritage Night, in honor of Oregon head coach Ernie Kent. Make sure to come decked out in Mexican attire and be ready to celebrate our neighbor to the south.

*Editor’s note: We are currently looking for any and all Dawg Pack members or alums who would be interested in participating in a photo shoot for ESPN The Magazine. The shoot will likely take place within the next two weeks somewhere on campus. More details will be presented as they become available. If you or your friends want to be a part of this special opportunity, email us at seattlesportsnet@gmail.com.

PAC-10! NEW YEAR’S EVE! Those two exclamations should be enough to make anyone excited for Thursday night’s conference opener. College kids combined with New Year’s Eve and the opening of Pac-10 basketball should make for a VERY raucous Dawg Pack.

We did a great job during the non-conference season and helped take the Dawgs to a 9-2 start and a #16 ranking. It’s time to take it to another level, though, with Pac-10 play. Come and celebrate the end of a great year by being as crazy as you can.

Also, regarding our upcoming game against Oregon on Saturday, get your Mexican Heritage Night gear ready and prepare for a fiesta. This is more than likely Ernesto’s last season as the head coach of the Ducks, barring some huge turnaround, so let’s make it great night!
