Happy New Year!

December 31, 2009 Leave a comment

Let’s hope 2010 is just as great a year in Seattle sports as ’09 was!

Now let’s go kill some Ducks.

And remind Ernie Kent why he should have thought twice about taking a booster’s daughter to Mexico out of wedlock. Yep.

Go Dawgs, M’s, Hawks, Sounders FC!

And R.I.P. Sonics (pour one out…respect).

December 31, 2009 Leave a comment

Important news for Husky fans!

ESPN The Magazine is doing a story on the Dawg Pack for their upcoming fan issue and have scheduled a photo shoot for THIS SATURDAY before the Oregon game.

The shoot will take place before and during the contest and will begin around 9:00 AM. ESPN has instructed me to gather as many Husky fans as possible to get out there for the shoot. The crazier the better!

The only requirements they’ve included are as follows:

Dawg Pack Dirt: Oregon State

Volume 6, Issue 11, December 31, 2009

Special to Seattle Sportsnet

*Editor’s note: We are currently looking for any and all Dawg Pack members or alums who would be interested in participating in a photo shoot for ESPN The Magazine. The shoot will likely take place within the next two weeks somewhere on campus. More details will be presented as they become available. If you or your friends want to be a part of this special opportunity, email us at seattlesportsnet@gmail.com.

PAC-10! NEW YEAR’S EVE! Those two exclamations should be enough to make anyone excited for Thursday night’s conference opener. College kids combined with New Year’s Eve and the opening of Pac-10 basketball should make for a VERY raucous Dawg Pack.

We did a great job during the non-conference season and helped take the Dawgs to a 9-2 start and a #16 ranking. It’s time to take it to another level, though, with Pac-10 play. Come and celebrate the end of a great year by being as crazy as you can.

Also, regarding our upcoming game against Oregon on Saturday, get your Mexican Heritage Night gear ready and prepare for a fiesta. This is more than likely Ernesto’s last season as the head coach of the Ducks, barring some huge turnaround, so let’s make it great night!

Hugh Millen: National Hero

December 30, 2009 1 comment

In case you haven’t noticed, the Hugh Millen vs. The Seahawks Receivers story has gained national attention in the past 24 hours. After we initially detailed the events shortly after they occurred, the story was picked up by Danny O’Neil of The Seattle Times, before making it to the hallowed pages of ProFootballTalk.com. The consensus from all parties was clear: the Hawks receivers were more or less out of line, and Hugh Millen is a genius.

We’ve discussed Hugh Millen at length before, so you know where we stand. The man is the Moses of football analysts, and questioning his word is akin to telling untruths with your hand on the Bible. Why the trio of wideouts felt the need to issue a veritable gang raping of Football Moses is beyond me, but suffice it to say everyone hates them and, in turn, loves Hugh.

Hugh Millen is only one man, but damn if he hasn’t become the mouthpiece for Seattle’s football fans in the past few years. How many of us have wanted to confront T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Nate Burleson, and Deion Branch the way Hugh did yesterday? Housh is a highly-paid big mouth that has been nothing short of a bust this season; Burleson fits under the same umbrella as Housh, though over a longer term; and Branch has epitomized unfulfilled potential after arriving from New England in 2006. All three of these guys are failures when it comes to on-field performance.

Bienvenidos a Mexican Fiesta Week!

December 29, 2009 1 comment

In case you haven’t checked your pocket schedule lately, the University of Oregon men’s basketball team is coming to town on Saturday, which means one thing: Mexican Fiesta Night.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking this gag has run its course. WRONG! If there is any gag that will never fully run its course, it’s this one, otherwise known as Ernie Kent’s nightmare.

Fact: The Huskies have won eight straight home contests against the Ducks, dating back to 2002. You think that has anything to do with Mexican Fiesta Night? Absolutely, it does. Which is why we must continue the tradition for as long as Kent is in command.

Hugh Millen vs. T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Round 1

December 29, 2009 2 comments

Listen to the Hugh-Housh fight by clicking here.

If you weren’t listening to 950 KJR AM around lunch hour this afternoon, you missed out on a rare opportunity to witness a member of the Seahawks exude passion this week.

It all began when regulars Nate Burleson and Deion Branch brought fellow wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh into the studio with them for their weekly show. Following their usual format, Branch and Burleson sat down for a cross-talk segment with midday host Dave ‘Softy’ Mahler before their show officially began.

A few minutes into their chat, frequent KJR contributor Hugh Millen joined the program via telephone and essentially littered the room with kerosene before lighting a match. (It should also be noted that Hugh Millen is close friends with Seahawks head coach Jim Mora, though that was not alluded to during the conversation.)

Elect Ron Fairly To The Canadian Baseball Hall Of Fame

December 29, 2009 Leave a comment

This sounds like a joke. It is not.

I was invited to join this grassroots campaign on Facebook, and I must say I was fairly intrigued (heh). Anyways, the 94 members of this group are dead serious about their intention of getting a guy like Fairly this semi-serious award. And by semi-serious, I mean the type of award that warrants at least two or three punch lines from the movie Canadian Bacon, as well as a few laughs, before being taken seriously.

Here’s a description of the campaign, taken directly from the Facebook group page:

“No one in the history of baseball has done what Ron Fairly has done in Canadian Baseball. You could look it up! Canadian Amatuer Champion Team member(1958 Edmonton), Montreal Expos All Star, Original Toronto Blue Jay and All Star, only one ever to be an All Star on both teams, and long time broadcaster for the Seattle Mariners which includes several radio and tv outlets in western Canada. Ron Fairly has had a profound influence on and has brought pride to many many Canadian baseball fans. He should be a member of this hall and it is incomplete without him. Stand up for a great ballplayer, teacher of the game, teammate and broadcaster.”

Black Guy/White Guy, Gay Or Straight?

December 28, 2009 15 comments

Let’s play a game I like to call ‘BlackGuyWhiteGuyGayOrStraight?’ I’ll show you a photo and you guess whether we’re looking at a black guy or a white guy, then try to determine based on looks alone whether he is gay or straight.

You’re probably wondering how this relates to both Seattle and sports. In fact, the person in the photo hails from the Seattle area and is a friend of mine, as well as a loyal reader of Seattle Sportsnet. So there you go. Oh, and he’s also a competitive bodybuilder, which is almost a sport. Kind of like competitive Scrabble.

If nothing else, this should serve as an example to everyone that digital cameras are as much a burden as they are a benefit. Here’s the photo:

Now feel free to take your guesses. There are two right answers, but we’ll consider everyone who participates a winner. Best of luck to you all!

Loyal SSN Reader To Host KJR Morning Show

December 28, 2009 7 comments

If you happen to be near a radio tomorrow (Tuesday) morning between the hours of 6:00 and 10:00 AM, go ahead and tune to 950 on your AM frequency and enjoy the dulcet tones of one Ryan Divish.

For those of you who don’t know Ryan Divish, he happens to be the Mariners beat writer for the Tacoma News-Tribune and one of Seattle Sportsnet’s most loyal readers.

On a personal note, Divish hails from Havre, Mont. and is a proud alum of the University of Montana. As one of the few Seattleites who has been to Havre, being able to say I know someone from that small town is a huge accomplishment. Husky women’s basketball fans may also recount that former player Loree Payne also hailed from the bustling metropolis of Havre (which, for the record, is pronounced ‘Hav-err’ and does not rhyme with the last name of a quarterback named Brett).

The Compton Honkies Crapped On Themselves, Then Went Bankrupt

December 28, 2009 1 comment

For those of you who regularly check out the site, you may remember past posts in which I referenced my pride and joy, the Compton Honkies. The Honkies are my fantasy football team and a proud member of the Pearce Fantasy League. We’re known for our bad-ass ways and a penchant for winning in the face of adversity, at least until this year.

Though other incarnations of the Compton Honkies have found ways to win in 2009 (one Honkies squad even took home a championship in a Yahoo! league), the original Honkies organization has compiled a 1-12 record (soon to be 1-13, after our final game) in the PFL this year and is the first team in the league’s history to owe money on top of our $50 entrance fee (each owner pays $50 up front to play, then has the chance to win or lose money on a weekly basis based on various results, all the while competing for a much larger payout in the championship). In short, we sucked badly.

Epic Fail: The 2009 Seattle Seahawks

December 28, 2009 5 comments

Let’s be honest. The Seahawks suck. They’re awful. They’re so bad that I don’t even watch them anymore. Part of that is due to a vacation which allowed me to miss three of their ballgames, but I doubt I would have subjected myself to their failure even if I’d been in town.

There are some diehards out there who can’t believe a true fan would turn apathetic on a team, but come on. Forcing the ’09 Hawks down someone’s throat is like taping their eyelids open and sitting them in front of an endless screening of Vanilla Sky. It’s just not right.

Dawg Pack Dirt: San Francisco

Volume 6, Issue 10, December 27, 2009

Special to Seattle Sportsnet

Great job against Texas A&M Dawg Pack! There hasn’t been a non-conference game in a few years where there was that much energy, especially during winter break. Despite the horrible injury to Texas A&M’s Derrick Roland, we came back and brought the energy to help the Dawgs get a quality win against a good opponent.

Happy Holidays!

December 24, 2009 Leave a comment

Still on vacation in South Carolina, so updates have been limited as a result. With Christmas almost here, we’ll hold off on any big posts until the weekend, at least, and we’ll be back in full swing by Monday.

Hope everyone is having a good holiday season so far, and that your Christmas Eve and Christmas go wonderfully. Looking forward to getting back to Seattle, I feel like I’m missing out on a lot of sports action right now.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Dawg Pack In ESPN The Mag!

December 21, 2009 1 comment

Attention Husky fans! Just wanted to pass along some great news to all of you direct from ESPN. The Dawg Pack will be featured in ESPN The Magazine’s upcoming fan issue as one of the best student sections in the nation!

The basis of the article is the Dawg Pack Dirt info sheet which has been a staple of Husky men’s basketball home games since 2004. The writers at ESPN were looking for unique and interesting fan rituals that have become traditions at sporting events. Somehow, they heard about the Dawg Pack and learned about the Dirt that I originally created five years ago.

This is a huge accomplishment for the university and for the Husky fan base as a whole. In 2003, when I was a freshman at UW, the student section at basketball games wasn’t nearly what it is today. In six years, the evolution to national recognition has been absolutely mind-boggling. There are thousands of you who have been a part of that change and you should all be proud.

As for the issue itself, I’m not exactly sure when it will hit newsstands, but as soon as I find out, I will let you all know. For now, Go Dawgs!

Dawg Pack Dirt: Texas A&M University

*Editor’s note: We apologize for failing to post the Dawg Pack Dirt for the Portland game on Saturday. An info sheet was compiled by our contributors for the game, but this editor was out of town and unable to post the Dirt online. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you. In other news, Dawg Pack Dirt will be featured in an ESPN The Magazine article for their upcoming fan issue, and the UW student section will simultaneously be recognized as one of the best in the nation. Go Dawgs!

Dawg Pack Dirt: Texas A&M

Volume 6, Issue 9, December 22, 2009

Special to Seattle Sportsnet

Great job against Portland, Dawg Pack! We weren’t too sure how many students would be in town to attend the game and although the Dawg Pack wasn’t full, it was still effective.

This next game against Texas A&M is our biggest game of the season yet, and we are going to have to do everything we can to make the Aggies never want to make a trip to Seattle again. Come prepared to lose your voice and to help the Dawgs take down a good non-conference opponent. If you can’t make it, make sure someone else gets your ticket and is willing to wear purple and be loud. With that, we hope you are all enjoying your break and enjoying the holidays. On with the dirt…
