My Sincerest Apologies To Lamar Odom

November 15, 2009 5 comments

lamarkhloeOkay, Lamar Odom. You win.

After watching the Khloe and Lamar wedding episode on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, it’s pretty much impossible to hate on the Lakers forward anymore. I actually feel bad for picking on the guy all these years.

I’ll admit, I said some nasty things about Lamar.

I stated that it looked like he was marrying a Chyna clone.

I mentioned that he was an inconsistent underachiever who was the NBA’s version of J.D. Drew.

I even went so far as to nickname him Lam-O Kardashian.

I retract all my previous statements. Lamar Odom is worthy of my affection.

I’m convinced that if anyone cheats in this relationship, it will be that wife of us his and not him. Crazy, I know. But if you saw the episode, you know what I’m talking about.

Brandon Jennings Scores 55 Points, David Stern Plots Revenge

November 15, 2009 Leave a comment

jenningssternMilwaukee Bucks rookie point guard Brandon Jennings went absolutely insane Saturday night and dropped 55 points on the runnin-and-gunnin (i.e. no defense) Golden State Warriors. The all-time rookie record for points scored in a single game is 58, set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1960.

You may remember Jennings as the guy who bumrushed the 2009 NBA Draft, interrupting commissioner David Stern’s announcement of the Phoenix Suns’ selection of Earl Clark. Stern, flabbergasted by Jennings’ emergence from the bowels of Madison Square Garden, improvised on the spot. “Earl is not here,” said Stern, “but the 10th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, Brandon Jennings, is here, so why don’t you welcome him!”

What a bad-ass picture. Cotto looks like he’s near death and Pac-Man appears to be missing teeth.

For the record, Pacquiao won by TKO in the 12th round.

Cameron Dollar Takes His Team To Quiznos Before Tipoff

November 14, 2009 Leave a comment

dollar3Just read this: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/collegesports/2010276420_seattleu15.html

My words won’t do it justice.

I mean, we all know that C-Money has put on a few over the years. Maybe we can blame Quiznos for the weight gain.

There is that Quiznos on 45th in the U. District. Just out of walking range, but right inside driving range. Which explains the problem.

Game 2 of the regular season tips off Saturday night as the Washington Huskies take on the Belmont Bruins.

The game will be part of a big day of Husky sports starting with the football team taking on Oregon State in Corvallis at 12:30 p.m. Who knows, maybe the football team can pull off the upset and the basketball team will do work and we could have our first Saturday of two wins in what seems like forever.

On that note, on with the dirt…

Baby Jesus Jarvis Varnado Can’t Save MSU In Loss

November 13, 2009 1 comment

jarvis-varnadoRemember Jarvis Varnado?

You know, the guy Jon Brockman wouldn’t be able to handle.

The Mississippi State forward who was unlike anyone any of us out here on the West Coast had ever seen before.

The guy who once flashed gang signs at Venoy Overton.

The second coming of Jesus, Himself, who was the subject of a special Seattle Sportsnet feature back in March.

Well, his team just lost. Again.

In fact, you might say that Varnado’s Mississippi State team is on a losing streak.

The 19th-ranked Bulldogs lost their first game of the year Friday night to unranked Rider. They also lost their last game of last year to the mighty Washington Huskies. That’s two losses in a row. That’s called a losing streak.

Scott Suggs Emerges In Husky Basketball Season Opener

November 13, 2009 1 comment

scottsuggsThank you, Scott Suggs.

I’ve been saying good things about you all offseason and in the first game of the year you go off. Well, kind of.

Suggs, who scored all of 24 points (total) a season ago, chipped in nine points in the team’s 74-69 win over Wright State on Friday. He finished the evening as the Huskies’ third-highest scorer, behind Isaiah Thomas (30) and Quincy Pondexter (12).

Displaying a silky smooth jumper that was rarely put on display in his freshman year, Suggs shot an impressive 3-4 from the field, including 1-2 from three-point range. He also converted two free throws on his only trip to the line.

The lanky 6’6″ sophomore endured a trying first season in 2008-2009 that was plagued by injury and inconsistency. A former Mr. Basketball award winner during his prep days in Missouri, Suggs considered transferring during the offseason before ultimately deciding that he belonged at Washington.

Nothing pretty about this one, save for a 30-point performance from Isaiah Thomas.

IT’S TONEY DOUGLAS TIME! In New York

November 13, 2009 Leave a comment

toneydouglasLast March, Florida State basketball player Toney Douglas became my new favorite athlete when I found out he was a pimp. Not a pimp in the literal sense, mind you, but more the cerebral state of mind.

How did I know Toney Douglas was a pimp, you ask? Simple. Florida State fans would display small, homemade 8.5″x11″ signs that read “IT’S TONEY DOUGLAS TIME.” Awesome.

Douglas was the all-around best player on what was more or less an average Florida State team, and the fans knew it. They embraced him like a God and knew that any time could be Toney Douglas time. What a great effing time.

Special to Seattle Sportsnet

The season officially gets underway this Friday against the Raiders of Wright State University.

The Dawgs can’t take this weekend’s games against these mid-majors lightly, especially since the three that are visiting Hec Ed this weekend all had decent seasons last year.

If we want the Dawgs to go anywhere this season then we definitely need to keep our game up and keep making Hec Ed the hardest place to play regardless of who is playing here. There isn’t too much dirt on the Raiders so we’ll have to improvise, which isn’t a problem for us.

With that being said, here’s the dirt…

Seattle Sportsnet Turns One

November 12, 2009 4 comments

griffeypileIt was one year ago today that Seattle Sportsnet was born. In the world of sports blogs and the internet, that’s a lifetime.

On the day I created this site, 11 months of pent-up emotion was released onto the world wide web after we, as fans, were forced to endure the worst year in the history of Seattle sports. You might have managed to repress the events of 2008, but thanks to our very first post you can hastily relive them. Thankfully, there are no pictures.

In just one year, the city of Seattle and its sports teams have managed to rebound quite nicely from the tragedy of ’08.

Well That Was Quick: Griffey, M’s Agree On Deal

November 11, 2009 1 comment

griffeycurtaincallKen Griffey, Jr. is re-returning to the Mariners, this time with much less hype and fanfare than the initial go-round.

Last year, we waited, we hoped, we prayed, and finally — FINALLY — Griffey and the M’s reached an agreement on a one-year deal. This time, it only took a matter of days to bring him back.

Credit The Seattle Times’ Larry Stone as the first to report the move earlier today. The deal is rumored to be very similar to the one that Junior and the team agreed upon a year ago. Griffey earned a base salary of $2 million in 2009, plus incentives.

The team’s primary designated hitter in 2009, Griffey turns 40 on Nov. 21 and will likely assume a reduced role in 2010. Entering his 22nd major league season, Griffey is not nearly the player he once was, but still commands a presence in the locker room. The veteran was the unquestioned team leader of the Mariners in 2009.

Though many expected Griffey’s initial return to the Mariners a season ago to be his final foray in Major League Baseball, Griffey himself had every desire to continue playing baseball in 2010.

Free Passes To 12th Man Appreciate Night!

November 10, 2009 15 comments

freestuffHere at Seattle Sportsnet, we like to think of ourselves as almost famous, kind of like the kid from that movie, Almost Famous. People know us, we’re kind of a big deal…almost. That’s us.

Anyways, we’re cool enough to know people who know people and that sort of thing, all of which leads me to these free passes that we’ve received for the 12th Man Appreciation Event this coming Monday. If you’re interested in attending, we can get you in for free for a night of bowling with Seahawks and celebrities at Bellevue’s Lucky Strike Lanes.

Simultaneously, we’re going to use this opportunity to pimp ourselves a little bit in exchange for the free passes we will gladly bestow upon you. So if you want to attend this event at no cost, here’s what you need to do:

1. Comment on this post with a good reason why you’re a worthy member of the 12th Man, then email us with your name and the number of passes you desire (keep it reasonable, folks).

2. Refer 10 readers to the site (I’ll admit, we have no real way of tracking this, but consider it a goodwill gesture on your part). Or maybe just tell people how much you love us. That would be nice.

3. Add us as your friend on Facebook (if you use Facebook) and when you receive the free passes, simply update your status to read, “I won free passes to the Seahawks 12th Man Appreciation Night thanks to SeattleSportsnet.com! Go Hawks!” Also, you’ll need to add a link in your status bar to our main home page at SeattleSportsnet.com.

That’s it! If you can accomplish all three of these tasks, the passes are yours and you’ll be attending the Seahawks’ 12th Man Appreciation Night absolutely free!

Go Hawks!

12th Man Appreciation Night This Monday!

November 10, 2009 2 comments

12thmanYou’re not doing anything on Monday night. I mean, come on. It’s Monday night. The networks don’t even broadcast their good shows until Wednesday, so your excuses are futile.

Anyways, for those of you (most of you, if not all of you) who happen to be free this coming Monday (November 16th, for the temporally-challenged), why not head over to Lucky Strike Lanes in Bellevue’s Lincoln Square for the Seahawks’ 12th Man Appreciation Night. That’s right, it’s all about you, 12th Man.

The event is hosted by Deion Branch and Nate Burleson (who are pretty much joined at the hip these days, am I right?) and sponsored, naturally, by the Hawks. It gets started at 6:00 PM and runs until 10:00 PM. For those of you unfamiliar with the area, there are a number of restaurants and bars to unwind at before or after the event if you want to extend the evening.

The cost to attend is $40 for adults and $20 for kids, but here’s the good part: ALL of the proceeds from the event go to benefit families in need this holiday season. Not some of the proceeds, but all of them (and we all know that some charities out there like to pocket a little on the side).

Seahawks Should Consider Trading Lofa Tatupu

November 10, 2009 3 comments

lofatatupuTrade Lofa Tatupu? That’s just crazy talk. He’s a Pro Bowler, a captain, and seemingly every fan (myself included) wears his jersey on gameday. All things included, from his on-field leadership to his marketing capabilities, this is a bonehead move. Right?

Wrong.

In just five seasons, Tatupu has established himself as one of the greatest defensive players in Seattle Seahawks history. A three-time Pro Bowl selection (2005, 2006, 2007) and an All-Pro (2007), the team’s middle linebacker is one of the faces of this franchise, along with Matt Hasselbeck.

Why trade him then?

Three reasons:

1) Because he’s valuable.

2) Because a worthy replacement is already on the roster.

3) Because the Seahawks are two years away from seriously contending.
