I know this article is old but the attitude you're talking about is only in anglo saxon countries where it's not a big sport ie US, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and to an extent Australia. This attitude is non existent in Europe, South America, West and North Africa and Asia. Most of the people there can't even comprehend that people don't like 'soccer'. In Australia it's to an extent because hardcore fans or semi hardcore fans detest those who hate their sport but aren't elitist about it and are welcoming of every level of fan but that's because the sport is far more popular than in the US, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. This other attitude of the all or nothing is psychological and comes from decades of needing to be defensive as a football fan, sorry soccer. But in Europe, they don't care if you don't like their sport, why should they?
