Huskies’ Suggs Considered Transferring

Suggs (far left, No. 15) endured a trying freshman season with the Huskies last year.

Scott Suggs, a sophomore guard on the University of Washington men’s basketball team, considered transferring after his freshman season, according to this blog post by Percy Allen of The Seattle Times.

Suggs battled injury and inconsistent playing time during his first year with the Huskies, and cited depression as one of the reasons he contemplated leaving Washington for another program.

The 6’6″ swingman averaged just 1.8 points per game in his inaugural campaign, and accumulated most of his minutes in the waning moments of blowout games.

A four-year starter at Missouri’s Washington High School, Suggs broke a 55-year-old school scoring record during his prep days and took home the state’s Mr. Basketball award.

Despite sporadic playing time, it became clear to most fans — myself included — over the past year that Suggs had the potential to be a starter in the short interim. Blessed with uncommon height for the shooting guard position and the ability to knock down a shot from virtually anywhere on the court, Suggs appears to be a perfect fit for Coach Lorenzo Romar’s offensive system.

Though his defense could stand to improve at the college level, Suggs is long and lanky and by his junior year should be filling Quincy Pondexter’s role as the team’s most trusted perimeter defender.

In addition, with Pondexter’s vacancy after the 2009-2010 season, Suggs will likely be first in line to assume most, if not all, of the graduating senior’s minutes.

Suggs goes on to credit UW as the place he ultimately felt was right for him, and should have that faith restored in the coming season. Though the Dawgs are loaded at the guard position (Ones in Isaiah Thomas, Venoy Overton, and Abdul Gaddy; Twos in the forms of Elston Turner and CJ Wilcox; Swingmen with Justin Holiday, Pondexter, and Suggs), there is no denying that minutes at the off-guard spot, with no set starter, should be available early on.

Best of luck to Suggs and all the Husky basketball players as the season gets underway.

A reminder that the team’s Midnight Madness ceremony will take place this Friday, immediately following the Husky volleyball game.
