We’ve been approved!  Seattle Sportsnet’s sponsorship of Russell Westbrook’s basketball-reference.com page is complete.  You can find our baby HERE.

For those of you not wanting to click the link, our ad message on Westbrook’s page is as follows:

“Visit Seattle Sportsnet, where we won’t steal your soul like Clay Bennett and his merry band of thieves.”

Also, we want to get you involved with our advertising.  Each month, week, whatever (based on interest), we’ll hold a contest in which you can submit your own quip for our ad in 230 characters or less (that’s how much space they give us, after the “Visit Seattle Sportsnet” part).  Get ready for fun!

Jon Brockman told me to call

March 10, 2009 4 comments

Jon Brockman got the best of a Washington State fan over the weekend, after the fan had spent Friday evening calling the Husky forward’s cell phone.

The fan, a WSU student, obtained Brockman’s cell phone number from a friend, then called the number repeatedly late Friday night and into Saturday morning.  The fan, who was later interviewed by Seattle Weekly, stated that he and his friends were  ”just trying to keep [Brockman] from sleeping.”

Brockman avenged the attack by posting the meddling fan’s phone number on his twitter page Saturday night.  Since then, the Coug fan in question has received upwards of 400 calls on behalf of Mr. Brockman, himself.  Props to the Coug fan, however, for having the balls to answer each call personally (though how he has time for that is beyond me).

Gregoire has no business attaching herself to local sports scene

Excuse me, Christine...I mean, Chris...can I ask you about the Sonics?

Excuse me, Christine...I mean, Chris...can I ask you about the Sonics?

If you happened to watch the Washington-Washington State basketball game on Saturday, you may have spotted Governor Chris (don’t call me Christine) Gregoire in attendance at Hec Ed, or through your television set on FSN.  Gregoire came out to support the schools in an obligatory PR move; she may be a UW grad, but her partiality lies not with either school at this point, but with the voters and their votes.

Gregoire is the anti-sports fan.  She let the Sonics walk out the door, and she comes across as someone more concerned with…well, something, I’m sure, although she’s ran up a huge budget deficit and continues to cut state jobs, so who knows if there is a silver lining here.  Without getting too deeply into politics, we can basically sum it up by saying that sports fans statewide have no reason to appreciate what Gregoire does.

Which is why it was unfortunate to see her at the game on Saturday.  A raincloud looming over what was otherwise a great game with a great end result. At one point during the game, Gregoire sat down with FSN geriatrics Barry Tompkins and Dan Belluomini and recited talking points that she may as well have had written on her arm.  Clearly, she knew nothing about either basketball program and had been briefed on the subject matter minutes earlier.  I almost felt embarrassed for her.

Sponsoring Russell Westbrook

I own you.

I own you.

I was reading Bill Simmons’ mailbag on ESPN yesterday, when I stumbled upon the greatest idea ever.  Take a look for yourself:

Q: This is a little bit closely related to your holiday gifts column only with a spin: How about sponsoring Mike Dunleavy’s page on basketball-reference.com and making a sarcastic comment about him on it? Hey, its only 10 bucks.
– Bilal, Boston

SG: Done and done. What’s sad is I spent a solid 45 minutes crafting the right testimonial before finally settling on what I wrote. Any time you can spend 10 bucks to sponsor the Undertaker, you have to do it.

This gave me my GIE.  I thought, what I need to do is sponsor an NBA player on basketball-reference.com using Seattle Sportsnet.  Then, I thought, that player needs to be on the Oklahoma City Thunder.  Why?  Because how awesome would it be as a Sonics fan, to witness a Thunder fan head to the page of one of their hometown heroes, only to find a one-liner bashing their team.  Yes, I thought, this will be perfect.
