UA's Jordan Hill

UA's Jordan Hill

If you’re a Husky Basketball fan, today is the biggest day of the season.  A win today will at the very least clinch Washington a tie for the conference championship.  It will also symbolize a turning point in the season for this UW squad.  Beating Arizona, a team that has plagued Washington for years, would vanquish any demons the Dawgs have heading into postseason play.

Arizona brings a three-headed monster into Hec Ed to battle the Huskies.  Led by an athletic trio of forwards Jordan Hill and Chase Budinger, and point guard Nic Wise, the Wildcats rely heavily on their Big Three to put the ball in the hoop and provide ample minutes.  The ‘Cats also receive contributions from freshman shooting guard Kyle Fogg, sophomore swingman Zane Johnson, and freshman forward Jamelle Horne.

Dawg Pack Dirt: University of Arizona

Volume 5, Issue 18, University of Arizona, February 28th, 2009

By Aaron Bean and Nate Taggart

ua-logoJust a quick note about last game. Great job, Dawg Pack!! We came with intensity and the rest of the arena fed off that. We are now in 1st place by a game and a half and we want to keep it that way so let’s go out there tomorrow with the same intensity. We win tomorrow and we guarantee at least a share of the Pac 10 title.

Also, sorry about the briefness of the dirt this week. It’s been a pretty crazy week with a lot of schoolwork and then we spent about 30 hours at Hec Ed on Wednesday and Thursday. Plus, there wasn’t much on these guys that we could find, but if you have any dirt of the rest of the Arizona players, especially the big 3, please let us know or bring it on Saturday. Anyways, on to the game…

Cougar Love

The Cougs take on ASU tomorrow

The Cougs take on ASU tomorrow

Unlike many Husky fans, I don’t hate the Washington State Cougars.  I hate the Oregon Ducks, and I strongly dislike Gonzaga, but the Cougars are tolerable to me.  Even at their worst, most Cougars don’t bother me.  Which is why I’m not afraid to say thank you to the Washington State basketball team.  It needs to be said, it’s time.

Yahoo’s Jason King succumbs to Husky Nation

February 27, 2009 Leave a comment

Four days after posting this condemnation of Yahoo College Basketball analyst Jason King, King has reissued his weekly Power Rankings of the Pac-10, and the numbers have changed significantly. Namely, the Dawgs have moved up an unprecedented four slots to #1….up from #5.

Interestingly enough, six of the 10 conference teams have a new number next to their name, with only 40% of the league retaining their old ranking. That could indicate one of two things: either a) there were some major shakeups and upsets over the past week or b) King doesn’t really know what he’s doing. I’m going with the latter.

No matter, however, it’s a small victory for West Coast basketball fans. Many of you told me you personally contacted King expressing your displeasure with his inability to analyze the sport, and King responded by doing his job better…for this week, at least. So good work, fans. Keep making your voices heard!

*P.S.: Last week’s rankings have been pulled from the Jason King archive….hmm.

Get Heaps in the Dawg Pack!

February 27, 2009 4 comments

Skyline QB and Husky recruit Jake Heaps will be in attendance for Saturday’s men’s basketball game against Arizona.  Heaps and a friend attempted to join the student section during last night’s game against Arizona State, but were subsequently kicked out by the Dave Libbey of ushers.

Make no mistake this Saturday, Heaps needs to be a part of the Pack.  Get him a bracelet, get his friends bracelets, it is key that we show this guy the love.  Don’t let ushers get involved this time, make sure they know who Jake Heaps is and that he’s VIP status!  Let’s get it done!

The fan’s view of the Dawgs victory

February 27, 2009 1 comment

If you want the real analysis read Bob Condotta.  He’s good.  We’re here to give you everything the media didn’t tell you, because you can only handle so many numbers, so much expert insight, and so many mentions of James Harden before you get bored. Let’s do this.

-In case you were wondering, yes, pictures of Derek Glasser, that dude’s butt, Jerren Shipp, the 32-ounce Taco Bell cup, the twisty bong, and the transsexual were distributed before the game in 8.5″-x-11″ form.  Of course, if you would like to step up and donate to the Dawg Pack, next time we could see images like that in gigantic, blown-up form.  Please contact us with your pledges, and we’ll hook you up with the leading Dawg Pack members.

Dawgs 2, Trannys 0

February 26, 2009 Leave a comment

I mean was there ever a doubt?  Sure, we were down late, but that’s nothing to this team.  Big shots and free throws won this game for the Dawgs, and helped put them in control of the Pac-1o with only two conference games remaining.

Pick your hero: Jon Brockman (21 and 11), Quincy Pondexter (10 and 12), Justin Dentmon (from goat to hero to goat to hero), Justin Holiday (solid defensive effort on James Harden), or Venoy Overton (for his energy, and disrupting the ASU offense).  You could make a case for any of these guys.

Big freakin’ win, Dawgs.  You control your own destiny now.  If you can win your final two conference games, YOU are Pac-10 champions.  Like the sound of that?  So do I.

Support Andrew Moritz by buying a bracelet

February 26, 2009 Leave a comment

The family of Andrew Moritz will be on hand at tonight’s UW-ASU game to sell bracelets in support of Andrew and his ongoing battle with cancer.  The money raised from the sale of the bracelets will go to help cover the costs of Andrew’s medical treatment, as well as the cost associated with his trips to and from Houston, where he’s receiving care.

The family will also be attending the next three Husky games as well, so if you are not attending tonight’s contest, or can’t catch up with the Moritzes this evening, make sure to check in with them over the course of the final home games.

You can find more information on the bracelets here.

Top 11: Pac-10 Men’s Basketball players of 2009

February 26, 2009 8 comments

There are a plethora of contenders when it comes to the best ballers in the Pac-10 this year.  No, it’s not the same quality as last year, with the likes of Kevin Love, O.J. Mayo, and Jerryd Bayless taking over the league, but there are still a number of high-profile hoopsters across the ten conference teams.  From Jon Brockman to James Harden and everyone in between, we’ll countdown the Top 11.  On to the list.

11. Nic Wise, PG, Arizona. The junior has had a solid year, averaging 14.8 PPG and 4.7 APG.  As one of Arizona’s big three (along with forwards Chase Budinger and Jordan Hill), Wise has been a target of opposing defenses all season long and has responded nicely.  He’s come on strong as of late, posting five straight games of double-figures scoring, including 27 and 26 in big wins over USC and UCLA, respectively.

ASU guard Jerren Shipp...and friend

ASU guard Jerren Shipp...and friend

Volume 5, Issue 17, Arizona State University, February 26th, 2009

Hands down. Game of the year. We need to bring it to ASU more than we’ve ever done so before. The winner of this game will be in the driver’s seat to win the Pac-10 regular conference title, something the Dawgs have never done. Despite us being ahead of them in standings for awhile now, ASU continues to be ranked ahead of us and they are going to be gunning for us since we beat them on their court and this game means a ton to them too. Be loud, act crazy, and leave Hec Ed on Thursday night with absolutely zero remnants of an audible voice. Read more…

Coach of the Year? Not OSU’s Robinson

February 25, 2009 Leave a comment

craigrobinsonIf it were up to the national media pundits, Oregon State’s Craig Robinson would already have the Pac-10 Coach of the Year award sitting on his mantle at home. The brother-in-law of President Barack Obama is the journalists’ choice for COY on a conference level, and quite possibly on a national level as well. But what does the media know?

If you ask me, Robinson’s appointment as Coach of the Year is strictly tied to his family tree. If, say, Ken Bone (in no way, shape, or form related to our new prez) had led the Beavers to an identical record under similar circumstances, we wouldn’t hear jack about Bone or the turnaround of Oregon State basketball. But because it’s Robinson, the sexy choice across the country, all we hear about is how great the new-look Beavs are.

If Erik Bedard could talk, he’d be Jarrod Washburn

February 25, 2009 3 comments

washburn1Erik Bedard hates you, but you’ll never hear him say it. Jarrod Washburn, on the other hand, hates you and isn’t afraid to let you know.

Lately, a lot of people have been making their opinions on Washburn public, including the guys over at USS Mariner, who had this to say. The basic consensus is that Jarrod Washburn is a jackass. He’s Erik Bedard with a voice, which means he’s angry and telling everyone about it.

To be honest, I can’t blame the guy. He’s basically sucked his whole Mariner career and no one appreciates it. He’s getting paid waaaaaay more than he’s actually worth, and the fans don’t like that. So we pick on him, and he lets us know he doesn’t like being picked on. Makes sense, right?

Facebook findings, MIPs, nostalgic images, and other digressions

ronkittleHoly crapola, Ron Kittle is on Facebook! If you collected baseball cards as a kid like I did, you may very well know that Ron Kittle is a former Major League Baseball player who, in his heyday, was regarded as a power hitter with an inability to hit for average.  Baseball Reference compares Kittle favorably with the Steve Balbonis of our world, which is no compliment.

Anyways, long story short, Ron Kittle is our friend on Facebook, and he’s not the only semi-famous person we’ve made an acquaintance with recently.  We’ve also hooked it up with Mariner broadcaster Dave Sims (a true American hero); ESPN college basketball analyst Doug Gottlieb;  current Major Leaguers Jack Cust, Corey Patterson, Chad Billingsley, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and others; Seattle’s own Felix Hernandez; quarterback Matt Leinart; journalists Peter Gammons and Jeff Pearlman; and even Sportscenter anchor and former KIRO TV sportscaster Linda Cohn.  You can find us on Facebook HERE.
