Andrew Moritz Update

Posted by Alex on January 25, 2009

For those of you who missed our first article on former Husky basketball player Andrew Moritz, please click here to read it and get some background info on the situation. And if you haven’t been keeping up with the Moritz family website to monitor Drew’s progress, I highly suggest you check it out.. This is Husky Nation, we’re a family.

After much deliberation, Andrew is headed to Houston, Texas to receive the first round of chemotherapy. He flies out on Monday morning, and will begin the treatment process on Tuesday. He will spend nearly a month in Houston before being able to come back home. His treatment plan can be found here.

The treatment is highly intense and has numerous side effects, but thanks to Andrew’s relative youth and athletic background, he will hopefully be more equipped to handle the rigors of this battle than most people in his situation.

For any of us who have been affected either directly or indirectly by cancer, you know how physically and emotionally taxing this can be for all involved. The family has a Paypal account setup via their website which is being used to take donations to help offset the cost of Andrew’s treatment. If you don’t have any spare dollars on hand, please take the time to offer Andrew and his family words of encouragement, or even Husky memories of days gone by. A smile and laughter can go a long way when fighting a battle such as this. Keep the Moritz family in your thoughts and prayers as they undergo this journey. We know Andrew can beat this, so let’s step up and help him do it!

Leroy Hill: Dumbass

Posted by Alex on January 25, 2009

The AP is reporting that Seattle Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill has been arrested for possession of marijuana in Atlanta.

Hill, a pending free agent, was spotted by witnesses asleep behind the wheel of his car, stopped at an intersection, before being confronted by police. After noticing a familiar aroma, police searched Hill’s vehicle and found two bags of marijuana. The linebacker was then taken into custody and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana, as well as a traffic violation (for falling asleep while in a moving vehicle), and an equipment violation (for having a busted brake light).

I have no problem with athletes smoking pot. What they do on their own time is their business, and if that includes puffing the magic dragon then fine, at least they’re not hurting anyone. Take Ricky Williams, for instance. The only people he ever hurt by smoking pot were himself and his agent (who took a paycut as a result of his banishment for the league). Ricky got a longer ban from pro football than, say, someone like Adam Jones, who was directly responsible for the hospitalization of multiple individuals after his Las Vegas strip club melee.

With that said, if athletes are going to smoke said pot, please don’t do it in your car. You can smoke all the weed you want in your home and no one will bug you. As soon as you take that cannibis on the road, however, you’re just asking for a boatload of trouble. And WTF, Leroy?! Falling asleep behind the wheel? You’re like an old, fat guy with narcolepsy. Go get a Red Bull. Take a 5-hour energy shot. Act out on the post-pot munchies. But don’t fall asleep in your car. And for that matter, don’t fall asleep in a car with a busted brake light either. That alone already makes you a target.

I’m not mad at Leroy Hill for the pot charge, that I can live with. I’m mad at Leroy Hill because he’s a dumbass. It’s one thing to make a mistake, it’s another to make that mistake because you can’t pull your head out. How can we count on this guy to understand snap counts and be mentally prepared come Sunday if he doesn’t have the sense to stash his weed and stay awake while driving?

Of course, as is the case with most pot cases, the only person truly hurt in all this is Leroy Hill. Hill just cost himself a ton of money he could have earned as a free agent. Worse, he may have cost himself a chance at playing for the only team he knows, the Seahawks. A high-character organization might be willing to forgive a player they had under contract, but when that man is anyone’s property they might just be prepared to watch him walk. Leroy Hill is a damn good player, but we don’t need to waste our money on a bonehead. Sorry Leroy, but you’re all smoked out.

Diary of a Road Trip: Part IV

Posted by Alex on January 25, 2009

Husky basketball fans and current Dawg Pack student section members Molly Waldron and Alicia Miller chronicle their journey to the depths of Eugene, Oregon in this five-part series following the team on a recent road trip.

Diary of a Road Trip: Part IV, Halftime
By Molly Waldron

8:15 PM, Thursday Evening, Half-Time

UW is up 40-37 at halftime. The surrounding fans are not amused with us.

One woman is upset during the first half with our sign momentarily obstructing her view from a time out taking place on the court. The couple next to me mutters, wondering who sold their tickets to two Husky fans.

I eye a helpless newborn baby adorned in green and yellow. (Or is it gold? I don’t care.) The men sitting next to Alicia admit that their team is terrible. The Duck mascot attempts a back flip and falls on his face.
