Dawg Pack Dirt: Portland State University

December 14, 2008 Leave a comment

Dawg Pack Dirt, Volume 5, Issue 7, Portland State University, December 14th, 2008

By Nate Taggart and Aaron Bean

Hope everyone’s finals went fantastic and I hope that everyone is enjoying the start to their Winter Break. The Dawgs play their first game of the break on Sunday and the crowd will inevitably be smaller than normal due to school being out and quite possibly the weather in my case but it’d be awesome if we could get a good contingent of the Dawg Pack there to make some noise all Winter Break.

So here’s the info on the 3rd Vikings team we’ve seen this year…

The Game:

-Portland State Vikings at Washington Huskies

-Sunday, December 14th, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.

-Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion

The Team:

-Portland State makes its home in the Big Sky Conference where it is easily amongst the top teams in the conference.

-The Vikings won the Big Sky last year going 23-10 before losing to Kansas in the first round of the NCAA tournament and they return 3 starters from that team.

-PSU is 7-1 this year with their lone loss coming to Hampton in overtime.

-Portland State’s notable win this season came against Portland, a team that beat the Dawgs to start the season.

The Coaches:

-Ken Bone for those that don’t remember, was a UW assistant coach from 2002-’05 where he helped bring Washington back to prominence before earning this head coaching job.

-Curtis Allen makes his living as an assistant at PSU after playing for the Dawgs from 2002-’04. During the intro video he is shown multiple times throwing up alley-oop passes to former Husky greats.

The Players:

-Jr. F #1 Julius “Exemplary” Thomas must be a very defensive person due to the fact that his one Facebook quote is, “Cuz there jealous.” Bad Grammar Count: 1

-Fr. G #2 Austonn Lazoff, unfortunately, is redshirting but if we see him out there we can have a little fun with him. All of his Facebook quotes are from “One Tree Hill”. He recently bought his sister the best birthday gift ever and considered stealing it. His Facebook status is, “I’m still looking for that special someone…” Dawg Pack ladies? I would imagine that it’s hard to say no to a guy that lists “The Notebook” as his favorite movie. During our MySpace snooping, even we found it a little creepy that his “About Me” section is a solid 1,200 words long and he lists 230 musicians among his “Favorite Music”. The worst part is that those 1,200 words had nothing of value to us besides giving us an example of how addicted to MySpace someone can be.

-Sr. G #4 Mickey Polis doesn’t give us much dirt but we still need to find a way to get in his head come game time because he is the one that hit 5 consecutive 3’s against us last year when Portland State almost beat us at home.

-Sr. G #10 Jeremiah Dominguez is his team’s star player but is listed as “Questionable” for Sunday’s game due to a “chipped fracture” in his right index finger. He was also arrested and possibly involved in a pretty serious assault and beating case in Mexico last year during Spring Break. Read this story below to learn all the details:
http://blog.oregonlive.com/sportsupdates/2008/04/psu_players_held_in_connection.html

-Jr. G #11 Dominic “Dom” Waters wrote in his interests: “I love to travelling.” Bad Grammar Count: 2

-If any of you need a video editing done just ask Jr. F #13 Tyrell Mara who owns his own company. He’s also a solid 2 for 7 from the charity stripe this season.

-Jr. F #14 Kyle Coston claims to be a National Chess Champion.

-So. G #15 Dane Johnson writes, “I just transfer to portland state i play bball, i use to live in columbus ohio. now just playing ball and goin to school.” Bad Grammar Count: 3

-So. F #21 Phil Nelson, for those that don’t remember, was a Husky only 2 years ago before transferring to Portland State and redshirting last season. I’m not really sure how to react to his transfer because I don’t really know his standing with this program but we can get into this shooter’s head and help him have a rough night regardless. I know a few of you out there were pretty good friends with him so I’m sure we have a phone number somewhere.

-So. F #30 Louis “Dr. Trey” Lee is a “softmore” Bad Grammar Count: 4. He says he doesn’t want to grow up. His nickname doesn’t seem to suit a guy that has taken 2 shots this season, neither being 3 pointers.

-Jr. F #44 Jamie “$J.C. Money” Jones “reps the UP Dynasty For Life”. Someone should tell him he plays for cross town rival, PSU.

GO DAWGS!

Beyond Seattle: UFC fighter breaks leg in disgustingly amazing fashion

December 14, 2008 6 comments

UFC fighter Corey Hill is famous. But probably not for the reasons he wanted. Hill broke his leg in dramatic fashion earlier this week by snapping it against his opponent’s shin in a live, nationally broadcast UFC fight. The break occurred early in the second round and there was a five- to ten-second delay between the time Hill’s leg snapped in two and the time the fight was called off.

Here’s the video, and we warn you that it contains graphic footage and is probably not for the faint of heart. Also, if you want to fast-forward to the “good parts,” the live moment occurs around the 7:30 mark, while the slow-motion version can be seen around the 9:10 point.

The only thing I could think of that compared to the look of Hill’s lower leg when he broke it was the scene in the first X-Men movie when the senator who hates mutants is transformed into a fish-like being that liquifies before melting completely into water. Hill, who also resembles Dhalsim from Street Fighter, looked rather amphibious upon breaking his leg. Flat-out amazing.
